Paleo Swaps: Chocolate Edition

Though not following the paleo diet myself, I can certainly appreciate the non-dairy (more specifically non-lactose) aspect! Whole Foods NYC sent over an assortment of their top paleo options and I focused all of my attention on the chocolate, of course.

Being that 65% of the population has a reduced ability to digest lactose post-infancy, why not avoid it all together? Especially when you're pairing your chocolate with red wine...

Here are my three new favorite brands:

Eating Evolved Coconut Butter Cups in Banana Cream

The subtle, yet authentic banana flavoring of these is remarkable! The cups are fully organic and low in sugar at only 5g of per cup.

Raaka Maple + Nibs

I was genuinely surprised at how much I liked this bar. I generally find maple syrup and flavoring to be a bit too sweet, but that wasn't the case with this bar. I also loved the beautiful and crunchy texture provided by the nibs!

Hu Kitchen Crunchy Mint Dark Chocolate Bar

Another perfectly subtle flavoring in this crunchy bar. And I love when chocolate bars are pre-cut into small pieces. Portion-control hack.

I (thankfully) didn't finish all of the chocolate in this manner, so I decided to throw some into my favorite berry smoothie recipe.

Berry Mint Chocolate Smoothie

- 1 cup frozen cherries + blueberries

- 2 cups almond milk

- 1/2 frozen banana

- 2 squares Hu Kitchen Mint Chocolate Bar; chopped finely

- 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder

Place in blender + blend until smooth!

*I may have also topped the smoothie with the leftover chocolate (not pictured).
